Since 1829, A l'Homme de Fer has been the Douai destination for household goods. The much-loved shop is the oldest business still operating in the town! The store moved several times before settling permanently at its current location in 1905. First in an Art Nouveau style building called ‘La fontaine à Sirot’, named after the town’s architect Henri Sirot. The building was burned down when the Germans left in 1918. It was rebuilt in a pure regional Art Deco style: with the customary use of red brick, stepped gables, decorative geometric motifs using projecting brickwork and alternating colours, and decoration on the street corner. Inside, the period furniture has survived, and the superb glass dome naturally illuminates the shop’s treasures. All Douaisians will tell you: if you are looking for a gift, head to A L'Homme de Fer where you will be sure to find what you are looking for!
