In the first half of the 20th century, the Church of Our Lady of the Miners was the central element around which all the life of a miner was organised: the mining towns, the schools, the pits, and leisure areas. Built between 1923 and 1927, it was the intention of the local mine company, the Compagnie des Mines d'Aniche, to provide religious services for the Polish miners in particular, who had recently arrived en masse. The architecture, liturgical furniture, decoration, and stained glass all combine to create a perfect example of art deco, by architects Louis-Marie Cordonnier and sons, famed participants in the post-war reconstruction of the region. Inside, the decorated reinforced concrete arches form a unique space, reminiscent of the interior of a mine gallery!
