Have you heard of Jean de Bologne? No? Well perhaps you know the artist who became famous in Italy under the name of Giambolona? This great sculptor was born in Douai in 1524, Leaving to study in Antwerp, before moving to Italy, particularly Florence, where he died in 1608. It is in Florence that you will find many of his masterpieces. Alexandre Descatoire, another Douai sculptor, was commissioned in 1909 to create a monument to the glory of Jean de Bologne. The present monument dates from 1932, the original having been destroyed by the Germans during the First World War.
