Porte d'Arras

Listed or registered (CNMHS), Gothic, City gate in Douai
  • Dating from 1312-1320, the Arras Gate consists of two massive round sandstone towers eleven metres high and eight metres in diameter. Originally, they were topped by conical roofs, which were removed on the orders of Charles V. The walls are 1.50m thick. The two towers are surrounded by a moat and linked by a drawbridge. Between the two towers, a niche houses a statue of the Virgin.
