Sculpture Jeunesse

Statue in Douai

Often imitated, parodied and photographed, Jeunesse was born through the chisel of the brilliant Albert Bouquillon. A Douaisian, the artist was introduced to drawing, painting, sculpture and architecture at the city’s schools. His work was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1934. The town of Douai commissioned several works from him, including Jeunesse in 1950, which was installed in the heart of the Parc Bertin. Perched on her pedestal, Jeunesse is an allegory with pronounced feminine curves. The posture of the young woman is reminiscent of the ‘contrapposto’ of classical Greek statuary: left leg bent, right leg extended, pelvis shifted. The dynamism of the hips balances the crossing of the arms above the head. Other works by the artist can be found scattered around the city.
