If the Lewarde Historical Mining Centre is classified as a Historical Monument, it is for the important industrial story it remembers. The most important mining museum in France, it attracts nearly 150,000 visitors each year, who come to explore this exceptional heritage. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, learn more about the origin of coal and the daily life of miners, their leisure activities and their struggle to improve the extremely difficult working conditions.
The Lewarde Mining Centre: more than a museum, a testimony...
The Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012!
An immersive adventure to experience with your family!
The Lewarde Historical Mining Centre is also an adventure to share with the family! A half-day that promises to be full of twists and turns:
– The Delloye Pit: visit the pit, the lamp house, the extraction machinery buildings, the administrative offices as they existed in 1930… During your free visit, discover how this incredible mine functioned at the peak of its operations!
– Guided tour in the bowels of the earth, in the heart of the mine: for one hour, with a helmet on, you can venture into the narrow passages, so familiar to the miners of yesteryear, and discover the evolution of techniques as mining developed. Put your ear to the ground: can you hear the sound of machines coming back to life? You are plunged into the last century, alongside the courageous miners, for a total immersion in the working conditions of the time!
– the personal testimony: let a former miner tell you about life in the mine. An emotional experience to listen to this rare testimony, doomed to disappear with time…
