A merchant town in the Middle Ages, a university town in the 16th century, then a judicial centre from the 18th century… Douai has seen many changes. Aboard one of our tour boats, discover 2,000 years of history and learn more about the Scarpe, a river that has played an essential role in the economic development of the town. Did you know that it is thanks to this waterway that many industries came to be, to develop, and to make Douai a major trading and commercial centre in the northern region?
Douai, the city of many faces!
What will I see on board the tour boats?
Take a seat on one of our boats and let yourself be carried away by this gentle river excursion, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Admire the unobstructed view of the Palais de Justice, the typical facades of the houses and gardens lining the river, the feudal motte (earthen fortification) built by Arnould I, Count of Flanders… Observe carefully each building, each bridge, each lock… They all bear witness to the evolution of Douai and have a story to tell… Return to the starting point, at the landing stage of the Palais de Justice, where the cells of the Parliament of Flanders used to be, and which you can visit for free! One of them was even occupied by the famous Eugène-François Vidocq, an adventurer, delinquent, convict, informer, policeman and private detective! Known as the father of criminology.
Other experiences by the water are to be discovered …
