Douai’s Belfry: Journey Back to The Middle Ages!

Every 15 minutes, visitors to Douai are surprised and uplifted by the sounds emanating from the town’s signature Belfry? This stunning symbol of the town. Rising to a height of 54 metres, this belfry dominates the town and the surrounding valley. An emblematic monument of Gothic art that seems to have many secrets to tell… Plunging you back to the Middle Ages…

‘Douai’s Belfry is the most beautiful of all!’

Built around 1380, the Douai Belfry is now a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, because, as many Douaisians say, ‘the Douai Belfry is the most beautiful of all!’. Stop for a moment at the foot of the town hall and take the time to admire its imposing stature and the magnificent details that make up its façade. Its sublime spire, consisting of the great lion of Flanders and 54 golden suns, is a real architectural gem.

Discover the guards’ room with its monumental fireplace, venture into the bellringers’ room, where the mechanical and automatic carillon clock is located, and admire the bell room on the third floor, which houses the carillon’s 62 bells, and features in the film ‘Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis’! Finally, climb the spiral staircase’s 196 steps to enjoy a breath-taking view over the City of Giants!

Walk to the sound of the carillon

Douai’s carillon is the most important in France! Well sheltered in the heart of the belfry, its bells give rhythm to the life of the city, thanks to an uninterrupted lineage of 35 carillonneurs. Every Saturday, Stefano Colletti, master carillonneur since 1998, plays a sonata for 20 minutes. Every quarter of an hour you can also enjoy listening to a different ritornello.

Visits take place all year round, every day at 3pm and 4.30pm (except Monday morning). An additional slot at 11am is added on weekends, holidays and during school holidays.

Full price: 6€ – Reduced price: 4€ (Children aged 6 to 18, students, job seekers, holder of disability card.)
