Description

Barry Flanagan is a Welsh artist known worldwide for his monumental bronze works depicting animals, often rabbits and horses. The work, with the real name Field Day 2, was installed in 1997 at the foot of the majestic Collegiate Church of St Peter for the ‘Dialogues’ exhibition with the idea of flooding the city with contemporary art works. Installed atop a large base, the horse adopts a graceful and light-footed posture that no rider can hope to spoil. This is the artist’s strength: to reflect on the heroic statuary inherited from classical art through spacess and materials contrasting architecture and contemporary art.
