Description

There was a church on this site before the 10th century. It was established as a collegiate church and given a chapter of canons in 1012 by the Count of Flanders. The old bell tower, which was in danger of falling into ruin, had to be pulled down and the present bell tower, begun in 1513, was not completed until 1686. In 1734, the notables of the parish, specifically the magistrates of the Parliament of Flanders, decided to rebuild it. The new church opened for worship on 26 July 1750. Inside, there are numerous paintings by the French school of the 18th century. The magnificent organ case came from the abbey of Anchin, it is the work of the sculptor Antoine Gilis and contains a Cavaillé-Coll organ with 73 stops.
