Sin-le-Noble

Description

Towns visited Sin-le-Noble - Waziers The history of Sin-le-Noble revolves around its bell tower and the green marshland, of which the fishpond is only one part. Originally the fishpond was made up of ‘rouissoirs’ (rectangular basins), most of which were water-filled former peat bogs, where people fished, harvested reeds and hay; where the cattle grazed; and where washing would be rinsed at the nearby spring. The Godion river then flowed towards Lallaing (the river will subsequently change its direction of flow when its upstream becomes lower than its downstream; a reversal due to mining subsidence). In 1873, only the communal fishpond and a very small Macquart fishpond existed. At that time, the communal fishpond had no dikes, which were constructed later and then gradually raised when mining subsidence prevented the water from flowing towards the Bouchard and Scarpe rivers. The current Macquart fishponds, a series of cooling ponds, were not built until much later, when the Compagnie des Mines d'Aniche built its first power station to the north of the fishpond in 1926. These were then enlarged to allow the hot water to circulate in the cooling basins. In 1950, a second, more modern power station was built, but the disposal of its water caused many problems and it was decommissioned in 1986. The fishpond of Sin-le-Noble is today a nature and relaxation centre open to all.
