The locks
A lock is a hydraulic engineering structure installed in a canal or a waterway to make it navigable and to allow boats to traverse height differences. Some sluice gates, or locks, were also designed to protect a river or a town from the effects of the tide.
The lock includes a chamber in which the water level can be raised and lowered. It is isolated from the upstream and downstream reaches by gates (formerly oak gates fitted with valves called ‘ventelles’).
