Description
Take a stroll through the 13,000 m² Jardin des Plantes in Douai. This garden was created on 30 Germinal, Year VII (April 15, 1797), at the time of the founding of the Horticultural Society, on the former grounds of the Capuchin monastery. In 1822, it became the only public promenade in Douai. At the end of the 18th century, gardeners introduced numerous plants from distant regions, making it one of the four largest gardens in France. In 1904, its upkeep was taken over by the City, but it quickly reverted to a more traditional garden, used by pharmacy students for its diverse species. Recently, the Parks and Gardens Department has launched a project to revitalize the site and showcase the plant diversity to the residents of Douai.
